In my experience and in those of others, these are some things that we have found to be helpful in times of distress:

Finding Connection

  • Seeking out partners, family, friends, neighbors, classmates, co-workers, colleagues

  • Seeking out a counsellor or psychologist

  • The Mental Health Line: 310-6789 (no area code needed; 24hrs)

  • 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433; 24hrs)

Engage Your Body

  • Research continually shows that exercise may help mental health

  • Consult your doctor or medical practitioner before starting out a new exercise program

Meditate

  • Try guided meditations such as those found in Insight Timer, a free app

Connect with Nature

  • Mother nature can have some healing, recharging, and replenishing properties

  • For example, take a walk through a local park

Create Art

  • Write in a journal

  • Play or listen to music

  • Colour, draw, sculpt, paint, build

Pet Therapy

  • Spend time with animals
